This past summer artist Martha Rich had a gallery show titled Don’t Tell Me What to Do at Wieden & Kennedy in Portland, OR. The show included a number of wall sized murals: one of them being a page from her sketchbook recreated on a wall mixing text and imagery. The major wall piece was made from cutouts of what looked almost like wood and then secured onto the wall giving the piece a slight 3-D effect. There was also an interactive aspect that consisted of a painting of a blue armadillo with its head cut out that attendees could put their faces in to have their pictures taken. The show ran for a couple of weeks in downtown Portland and was highly successful. Martha is a perfect example of how fine art and commercial design intersect– we are looking forward to her next show!
