Livia Cives created this illustration for Johns Hopkins Magazine, the flagship publication for Johns Hopkins University. The illo is for an article about a program called Women in Small Enterprise. The program provides financial training to women who receive micro loans in Asia and the Americas while also addressing women’s rights in relation to business.
The women in this piece are shown weaving a blanket– the muted color palate is obviously quite visually pleasing. However, the stark contrast of the women’s black hair draws the viewer to look not at the sprawling blanket, but instead at the faces of the women working. The image isn’t about product, but instead about the people behind the products. Cives captures the essence of this article in a very important way. We are looking forward to seeing more from Cives in the future!
